LoGS are non-statutory sites and were formerly called Regionally Important Geological Sites or RIGS. They are the geological equivalent of Local Wildlife Sites. GeoEssex is working to identify these sites, an ongoing process that involves the nomination of proposed sites, site inspections and the creation of citations for each site. Some 167 sites have been identified as LoGS and they include former quarries, coastal sections, buildings and geomorphological features. LoGS proposed by the GeoEssex Steering Group are then submitted for approval by the Local Sites Partnership so that they can be put into the public domain for planning and other purposes. These sites are then included in reports submitted to each of the relevant district and city councils.
